Thanks for visiting my page. My name is Craig Sawyer and I am the SRO assigned to J. Larry Newton Elementary School. I also supervise the other Fairhope Police Department SRO's assigned to Fairhope West Elementary, Fairhope East Elementary, Fairhope Middle, and Fairhope High.
I began my police career when I enlisted as a Law Enforcement Specialist in the U.S. Air Force. I served on active duty from 1986 to 1991, and my duty locations included Texas, England, and the Persian Gulf. I am a Gulf War veteran and left the military with the rank of sergeant.
I next went to San Jose, California, and joined the San Jose Police Department (http://www.sjpd.org/ ), serving there from 1992 to 1998. From the time that I was very young, it had been a dream of mine to be a police officer in a large California city and San Jose PD had a reputation as one of the leading agencies in the nation. While I was there, I worked in patrol, training (FTO), and Project Crackdown (gang/drug unit).
In 1998 I moved to Fairhope. My first assignment with Fairhope PD? Crossing guard for a newly opened J. Larry Newton Elementary School. The very first day the school opened, I was the guy in police uniform on County Road 32 directing traffic. Since then, my assignments with Fairhope PD have included patrol, investigations, evidence, training, public information, SWAT, and more.
I am married to Hope, a teacher at Fairhope West. We have five children.
