Inspired by elderly military American veterans of the mid to late 20th Century, and a lack of elderly-based superheroes, the original concept for Oldman started as a seven-minute short film before being re-imagined in 2016 as a comic book series. Both the original seven-page script, and the three, twenty-two paged, written issues of the comic book were written by Seth Rosenthal. The comic book, with issue one published and available in stores across the Eastern United States, was illustrated by a hired illustrator no longer with the project. After being run through focus groups, brief research found the target audience of Oldman to include men and women ages 13 to 87. As of October 2017, over 100 copies had been sold between online and in-store sales. Oldman is published under the independent comic book company Oldverse Comics, also founded by Seth Rosenthal. The comic book script is written in a previously unused format where, rather than have the author write out the approximate size of each box for the illustrator, worksheet-esque boxes are provided.
