STOCHASTIC GEOMECHANICS RESEARCH GROUP (SGRG)

Welcome to SGRG!

This research group focuses on developing understanding of the behaviour of Geomaterials by considering the uncertainty associated with material parameters.  Presently, we are working on probabilistic characterization of rock mass, reliability-based design of rock structures (Slopes, Tunnels and Caverns), stochastic fracture networks and parameter estimation using Bayesian inversion.

We apply numerical methods (both continuum and discontinuum) to analyze the rock structures. Additionally, we are in process of procuring experimental setups to understand propagation of uncertainty from micro to macroscale of geomaterials. Our mission is to understand the implication of uncertainty in material parameters in geotechnical design and educate geotechnical and mining professionals about benefits of uncertainty analysis regarding safety and cost, subsequently encouraging them for its industrial application.

Notice: This group has been created  recently and is actively looking for passionate researchers willing to join as PhD Scholars and for MTech positions. Interested students with background in Civil, Mining and Geology are advised to contact through email.

Interested BTech students (Mining and Civil Engineering) are also encouraged to apply for Summer internships and Direct PhD positions.

Potential Research areas

1. Stochastic Fracture Mechanics.

2. Reliability analysis of structures (Slopes, Tunnels, Mine Pillars) in rock mass.

3. Rock - cutting tool interaction during mechanical excavation.

4. Damage based constitutive modelling under static and dynamic conditions.

5. Grain based modelling of intact rocks.

6. Data Driven modelling of Mining Systems.
