About Us

How is SGRC different from other churches?

Sovereign Grace Reformed Church is a congregation of Christian believers. We are "Christian" in that we reaffirm the doctrines of historic Christian orthodoxy such as those defined by the Apostles' Creed and the great ecumenical councils of the first millennium of Christian history.

We believe the cardinal doctrines that all Christian churches hold in common, such as the Trinity, the atonement, justification by faith, the virgin birth and bodily resurrection of Jesus, his miracles, and the inspiration of Holy Scripture.

Below however, you will find some of the distinctives of how SGRC is different from other Christian churches.

Foundational Beliefs: The 5 Solas

The five solas of the Reformation are at the very core of our teaching, preaching, and worship: Scripture Alone, Faith Alone, Grace Alone, Christ Alone, Glory to God Alone.

Sola Scriptura (“Scripture Alone”): The Bible alone is our authority for faith and life.

Sola Fide (“Faith Alone”): We are saved through faith alone in Jesus Christ.

Sola Gratia (“Grace Alone”): We are saved by the grace of God alone.

Solus Christus (“Christ Alone”): Jesus Christ alone is our Lord, Savior, and King.

Soli Deo Gloria (“To The Glory Of God Alone”): We live for the glory of God alone.

Confessional

SGRC is a "confessional" church. In fact, all churches are confessional in the sense that they teach (& therefore confess) what they believe to be true about the Bible. For this reason, even churches that say they reject man-made creeds, confessions, and doctrinal statements are actually confessional.

We are confessional in that we believe our doctrinal standards (The Westminster Confession of Faith, and the Westminster Larger and Shorter Catechisms) are accurate and faithful summaries of the doctrines found throughout the Scriptures. These documents were written during the 1640's and have defined Reformed and Presbyterian churches for nearly 400 years.

Of course, they are "secondary standards" and are only valuable in that they reflect the teachings of Scripture. The Bible alone is our authority for all matters of faith and practice. Click here to learn more about our doctrinal standards.

Reformed

Our theology is "Reformed" in that the distinctive doctrines of the Reformers such as Luther, Calvin, and Knox are embraced. This distinguishes our Reformed tradition from other Protestant bodies. Reformed theology places primary emphasis on the doctrine of God. It is God-Centered.

Presbyterian

The word "Presbyterian" comes from the Greek word presbuteros which means "elder." Sovereign Grace Reformed Church is a church that is led by a plurality of elders. These men are chosen for office by the congregation and together have oversight over the life and ministry of the church. Click here to learn more about our elders.

Regulated Worship

Because Scripture is our ultimate authority, it defines not only our theology (what we believe about God) but also how we are to worship Him. This is what we refer to as the “Regulative Principle of Worship.” The Regulative Principle of Worship says that we are to worship God only in the manner He has commanded us in His Word.

For this reason, you will not find entertainment focused worship at Sovereign Grace Reformed Church. Our worship is simple, reverent, Scripturally grounded, Christ centered, Bible saturated worship. Each Lord's Day as God's Word is read and preached, we respond by praying, singing, confessing our faith, giving thanks, and receiving the sacraments.
