Context:
The Map Room paintings were created after a year in Barcelona. Before that, I had shifted from using bright colours to more subdued, self-coloured materials. I had expected the vibrant hues of Spain to influence my new paintings, despite my studio being in the dimly lit Gothic Quarter and relying on artificial light. Brighter colours did eventually emerge later after the Map Room paintings and brighter colour continued to be prevalent in my subsequent work.
Each of the Map Room paintings, with their subdued grey tones and subtle whispers of colour, embodied my fascination with grids and mapping concepts. Evolving from my earlier gridworks, they were also inspired by time spent in the British Library's Map Room and later the Biblioteca de Catalunya.
Through gridworks and Maps, I explored the idea of repetition, and these paintings continued and embody that exploration. I enjoyed the challenge of finding depth and meaning in the intricate beauty of overlooked details.
