In Brief
Five 183x183cm paintings with black parcel forms arranged in grids, each working independently within a serial structure. In the installation Mutual Exclusion Zone, one painting is horizontal among vertical works, creating subtle variation and relational tension.
Context:
The Exclusion Zone series comprises five large square paintings with black parcel forms arranged in a grid on black canvas or panel surfaces. Each painting operates independently while also forming part of a serial exploration of repetition, containment, and relational space. Subtle variations in surface and spacing introduce depth, shadow, and relational complexity, reflecting the interplay of material, structure, and perception.
The installation Mutual Exclusion Zone presents the five paintings together, with one work oriented horizontally, almost like a table or altar, while the others remain vertical. The arrangement forms a relational field, highlighting tension between repetition and variation, containment and openness. The horizontal painting acts as a pivot, accentuating gravity, accumulation, and the dialogue between individual parcels and the overall grid structure.
These works sit within a sustained preoccupation with grids, following earlier experiments with falling forms and horizontal canvases, and preceding later map-based works. Across the series and installation, minimal forms, repetition, and containment explore how structure, process, and material interact to shape perception and meaning.
