Welcome to AP Literature! The theme for the 2026 Summer Reading Project is Technology - Blight or Blessing? Your summer reading assignment has 2 parts. Please follow the instructions carefully. The entire project is due the first day of school (August 24, 2026 by 11:59 pm) via email to covington8418@gmail.com. You will get a confirmation email from me once I have received it; if you do not, double check that you have sent it to the correct email address. Late submissions will receive a 25-point deduction. No exceptions.
For this part of the assignment, choose a novel that focuses on some element of technology and how it has or can become dangerous or problematic. Technology is not just computers, but any application of scientific knowledge, skills, methods, or processes for practical, industrial, and/or human purposes (if you need a recommendation, consult the school’s summer reading website). Read and annotate the novel meaningfully. Take note of specific characters, the setting, the narrator, major conflicts/events, symbols, etc. Complete a quote journal in which you use quotations from the beginning, middle, and end of the book to analyze the author's use of literary techniques to construct his/her work. The journal must be typed and page numbers included for all quotations. Detailed instructions for the quote journal are printed in the Google Document below.
For this part of the assignment, Choose a film produced within the last 50 years and watch it a few times, taking notes of important elements. Write a well-organized and detailed literary argumentation on the film, responding to the prompt from the 2026 AP Exam. Your essay should be no longer than 2.5 pages typed, double spaced with 12 pt. font. I have provided the prompts and a simplified, generic AP rubric for grading in the document at the bottom of the page.
