SFT 10

Workshop on Symplectic Field Theory 10

Humboldt Universität zu Berlin

Main program: August 28 - September 1, 2023

Precourse: August 26 - August 27, 2023

The focus of the workshop will be on recent developments in SFT and holomorphic curve theories more generally, with an emphasis on methods that go beyond the standard analytical package. This will include, for instance, some recent advances in the use of Kuranishi structures and related virtual techniques, but also some recent developments on applying the algebraic structure of SFT toward questions in contact topology.

As with previous installments in the SFT workshop series, the workshop will be preceded on the weekend by a precourse intended to prepare Ph.D. students and other non-experts for the main program. The precourse will include short introductory courses on the Gromov-Witten invariants, the algebraic structure of symplectic field theory, and virtual techniques. Basic knowledge of symplectic geometry and J-holomorphic curve theory (e.g. some familiarity with Gromov's compactness theorem) will be assumed; for more information, see the speakers page.

Location

All activities will take place at the Humboldt-Universität's central campus in Berlin-Mitte.

(You can click the map at the right to see walking directions between the two venues. That isn't really useful unless you accidentally go to the wrong one in the morning, but it tells you that if you do that, you'll be at least 10 minutes late.)

Achtung: Do not go to the HU Berlin mathematics department! That is in Adlershof, which is nowhere near Mitte.*

Here is a list of participants.

The registration deadline has now passed.

*And now, a bit of SFT workshop folklore.
The third SFT workshop took place in 2008, and was the first one to be hosted in Berlin. There was a participant at that workshop who had absent-mindedly forgotten when his flight from California to Germany was due to depart, but realized it less than a few hours ahead of time, panicked, rushed to the airport without any luggage, and made the flight. This participant evidently figured he would be able to make up for his lack of luggage by buying some clothes in Berlin after arrival, unaware that buying things on weekends can be difficult in Germany (e.g. one should assume that all retail stores will be closed on Sundays). He also had not brought with him any information about the location of the workshop, but instead tried asking a local upon arrival where the HU math department is. That led him to Adlershof, where everything was closed and no one was there, because it was the weekend, and the workshop was in Mitte. According to legend, that participant slept on a park bench Saturday night -- having no information about the hotel that had been reserved for him -- but did somehow manage to find the workshop on Sunday, and eventually even managed to buy some clean underwear.
Don't let this happen to you.
