'Twas the best of times! 'Twas the worst of times... No, I'm just kidding. 😁😅
My time as a general assistant was part of a 3-month long learnership, which sought to teach unemployed young people New Venture Creation skills, while equipping them with retail readiness skills. As such, I spent half of the time in the programme attending classes, and the other half working at a Checker's retail store.
As a general assistant, my responsibilities varied depending on which department my branch manager saw fit to place me in on a particular day. As such, I would pack shelves, mind the fruit and veg section and assist at the bakery, among other things.
However, the department in which I excelled the most was the deli, in which I'd prepare different kinds of foods. Already being an organized person, it was easy for me to sync to the discipline the kitchen required. It is the heat of that kitchen that refined my customer service, collaboration and time management skills.
The most valuable lesson I learned during my time there was: Be your best and work your hardest, even when no one is watching.
