Dr. Avik Samanta is an Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Indian Institute of Technology Patna. He received his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from IIT Bombay, M.Tech from IIT Kanpur, and B.E. from IIEST Shibpur (formerly Bengal Engineering College). He began his professional career as a design engineer at Development Consultants Pvt. Ltd.(2001-03), Kolkata, and later served as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore, from 2010 to 2013, where he focused on seismic response analysis and performance-based design for disaster mitigation.
Dr. Samanta’s academic and research interests lie in structural fire engineering, earthquake engineering, steel and thin-walled structures, and vibration control. He specializes in combining experimental investigations with numerical modeling to study structural behavior under elevated temperatures and seismic loads. He has led government-funded research projects, including a DST-sponsored study on seismic vulnerability in Patna, and has completed numerous consultancy assignments in structural performance assessment, fire resistance design, and safety evaluations. His scholarly contributions have been published in leading international journals, and his work has been recognized with prestigious awards, including the Dr. Jai Krishna Prize from the Institution of Engineers (India) and a Best Paper Award at RAID 2024.
As an educator, Dr. Samanta has taught a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, including Structural Analysis, Design of Steel Structures, Earthquake Engineering, and Finite Element Methods. He has guided several Ph.D. and M.Tech scholars, with research spanning structural resilience under extreme loading conditions. His work reflects a strong integration of theory, experimentation, and real-world engineering practice.
