Andrew R. Sewick

Spanish Instructor

At the age of 16, I traveled to Spain with my high school Spanish class. The trip marked the beginning of a lifelong journey of language and cultural exploration. When exploring universities for my post-high school studies, I looked for schools that offered extensive Spanish-language studies and study abroad opportunities. I ultimately chose Michigan State University to study Spanish and linguistics. During my undergraduate studies, I studied two consecutive summers in Spain (Santander and Madrid). The year following my graduation, I began a Master of Arts program with New York University at their satellite campus in Madrid, Spain and completed my studies in 2008.

My desire to teach is one that evolved over time. At the beginning of my language studies, I envisioned myself as a future Spanish teacher; however, I didn't really know what kind of Spanish teacher I wanted to be. I ultimately determined that I wanted to work with adult language learners and gained experience as an adjunct instructor at various community colleges. In order to hone my pedagogical skills, I enrolled in the Master of Arts in Foreign Language Teaching (MAFLT) program online through Michigan State University and earned my degree in 2018.

I currently hold a lectureship position at a public university in Virginia teaching Spanish courses at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels. My current interests include curriculum and lesson design, task-based language teaching, and intercultural competence in second language instruction. The contents of this portfolio include information about my experience and evidence of my teaching abilities. If you have any questions or comments, please contact me at sewickan@gmail.com.
