If you try a DIY approach and properly apply putty to your car’s body, it can last for up to 4 years. When you see a fading topcoat or visible outlines of the repairs, consider that the putty’s lifespan has been completed.

Professional Grade

A professional-grade auto putty application can last for 10 to 15+ years. You will see minimal changes in the putty if the putty starts to fail.

Intense UV Rays and Heat

The extreme summer heat and harmful UV (ultraviolet) rays trigger the expansion and contraction of metal panels. If the filler is too thick, it won’t flex with the metal, leading to fine surface cracks. 

High Humidity

Many filler putties are hygroscopic, meaning they absorb moisture from the air. In a state like Florida, it can lead to bubbling, blistering, or rust buildup underneath the repair. To prevent this, the filler must be sealed properly with a waterproof primer or topcoat. 

Moisture and Salt

Proximity to the ocean accelerates the oxidation process. If moisture seeps into small imperfections in the filler, it can cause the repair to fail in less than half a year. 

Application Quality

The key to proper application is a thinner layer, proper mixing, and excellent adhesion to clean, rust-free metal. Improper application quality can also affect a filler putty’s performance and lifespan.
