Allow children to participate in scavenger hunts. For example, when children are learning about nouns, have them look around the house to find nouns for things and people. Scavenger hunts are a great idea for any core subject.
Allow children to utilize www.abcya.com and www.starfall.com. These websites have free games and activities that promote engagement, while children are learning math. language arts, science, and social studies.
Read picture books with children and ask them questions about the story to increase comprehension. The use of picture books is engaging because children like the visuals they provide.
Allow students to be creative. For example, have children identify the characters, setting, and plot of stories by drawing pictures instead of answering orally.
