In eyeglasses, the actual lens does not cost much, but the frames make up most of the price. The annual change in prescription leads to a surplus of old glasses, allowing for the repurposing of frames. There is also a surplus of old hearing aids for individuals with hearing loss, as their prescription changes every three to five years. According to BBC News, approximately 2.5 billion people in the world need glasses but cannot afford or access them, and according to the National Councilor Aging, 74% of Americans with hearing loss cannot afford hearing aids priced at $2500. The absence of glasses and hearing aids for lower-income families facing vision or hearing problems creates significant challenges for essential everyday tasks. At Serving Society, we are dedicated to collecting used eye frames and hearing aids in any condition that one may no longer use. For collected eyeglasses, we will clean, polish, classify, sort, and package them for distribution to non-profit organizations such as Lions Club and Rotary Club. These organizations will then send medical mission teams with optometrists to distribute these eyeglasses to individuals in need worldwide free of charge. Similarly, for hearing aids, we will clean, polish, classify, sort, and package them to Global Hearing Aid Banks where they are refurbished and provided to needy individuals through collaboration with several hearing aid doctors. Please consider donating used eyeglasses or hearing aids to make a profound impact on the lives of those in need.
