Unit Price Short Stories

The basics

In Fall 2018, I collaborated with my sixth-grade math students to create short stories that involved unit prices. Over the course of three days, we dove into the meaning of service-learning, grew in our knowledge of what it means to have a disability, and developed mathematical short stories that involve context our class and the low-incidence special education class were both learning. Service-learning is an action based approach to teaching that takes the curriculum to the next level by creating a student-led project where they actively find a need in the community and develop solutions on how to address the concern utilizing their knowledge of academic material is being taught. This method of learning promotes student-led engagement by creating an active learning setting that promotes students’ excitement about the topic.
