Philosophical Doctor in Biological Sciences | Life, Cognition, Ecology & Complexity Sciences | Consultant & Therapist
My work is eclectic but circulates around themes related to complex systems, cognitive science, theoretical biology, Earth system and climate science. I am curious about the origin of life and the origin of mind and consciousness at different scales and in different systems such as microbes, sequoias, primates and planets. Astrobiology, epistemology, the multiplicity of models, the ontological bases of cognition, habitability and the evolution of technospheres (the theoretical limits of AI) and biopheres also interest me.
I am a biologist who holds a Ph.D in Microbiology and Immunology from the Medical School of the Federal University of São Paulo, Brazil, with a work focused on the cellular and molecular biology of symbiotic interactions and a second Ph.D in Agronomic Sciences and Genetic Engineering from the Université catholique de Louvain, Belgium, with a work focused on the modeling of the Earth system complexity (under the lens of the Gaia hypothesis) from theoretical biology approaches such as autopoiesis, active inference (Free energy principle), Chemical organization theory, and the (M,R)-system.
I am member of the Editorial Board of Cybernetics & Human Knowing; A Journal of Second Order Cybernetics, Autopoiesis & Cybersemiotics and Topical Advisory Panel Editor of Mathematical Biology journal. I was Visiting Professor of Microbial Genetics at the University of Brasilia, Brazil and Lecturer of Genotype of the Earth system, at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Germany. But also visiting scholar at the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL), United States, the University Autonoma de Madrid, Spain, Gent Universitëit, Belgium, and visiting researcher at IULM University of Milan, Italy.
Beyond the academy, I act as a Advisor and Consultant, but also as Therapist from applying systems thinking, relational biology, biology of cognition and the enactive approach to help individuals and organizations navigate the complexities of the becoming world. I like poetry, painting, theater, dance and music and all forms of artistic expression that link the existence of being and time to the singular universe.
