Our Story
More Than Beads. Every Piece Has a Story. Everybody has a story. Some are written in words. Others are carried in memories, tucked away in photographs, or held quietly in places the world never sees. At Serenitee & Co., I believe some stories deserve to be worn.
I'm Dr. Rochelle D. Stanley—educator, writer, poet, artist, storyteller, and founder of Serenitee & Co. I've spent much of my life using words and creativity to make meaning of experiences, celebrate identity, and give voice to stories that might otherwise go untold.
But some chapters require more than words. When dementia joined our family, it didn't knock, introduce itself, or ask permission. It simply moved in, rearranged our lives, interrupted our plans, and began rewriting a story we thought we knew.
Dementia has a way of taking up space. In your home. In your conversations. In your calendar. In your head. And if you're not careful, it will occupy every corner of your peace, too. I needed something dementia couldn't take over. So I made room for beads.
One bead. One brushstroke. One color. One creation at a time.
What began as a creative outlet became a way to reclaim moments that belonged to me. Not to caregiving. Not to the endless questions, unpredictable days, or the grief that sometimes arrives long before goodbye. Just me.
There is something powerful about taking ordinary pieces of wood and turning them into something extraordinary. I could choose the colors, change the design, and make something beautiful from pieces that, on their own, didn't seem like much.
In a season when so much felt beyond my control, creating reminded me that I could still make choices. I could still make beauty. I could still make room for joy without pretending everything was okay. The beads didn't change dementia. They changed what I could do with a moment.
Somewhere between painting, stringing, and creating, Serenitee & Co. found its purpose. What began as a way to protect my own peace grew into an opportunity to help others tell their stories through art.
Rooted in my appreciation for African beadwork traditions, where beads have long communicated identity, heritage, status, and belonging, Serenitee & Co. celebrates the relationship between culture, creativity, and personal expression.
Every hand-painted wooden bead, handcrafted necklace, bracelet, and accessory turns color, texture, and imagination into something meaningful. Some pieces celebrate joy. Others honor a memory, mark a milestone, affirm an identity, or simply make someone smile. No two people have the same story. Their wearable art shouldn't have to look alike either.
Beyond the Beads: The Serenitee Method.
My belief in the power of creative expression also inspired The Serenitee Method, a hands-on experience that brings together beadmaking, personal meaning, storytelling, reflection, and human connection.
In our Build Your Story workshops, participants select beads, explore colors and symbols that hold personal meaning, and create something that reflects who they are.
Some come with stories they are eager to share. Others come for the joy of making something with their hands. Both belong.
You don't need to be an artist. You don't need the perfect words. You certainly don't need to have life figured out. You simply need to bring your story.
The Serenitee Method isn't therapy, nor is it a promise that creativity will erase life's difficulties. It is an invitation to slow down, make something meaningful, connect with others, and perhaps discover a little breathing room in the process.
Because sometimes our hands find a way to express what our words cannot.

Dementia may have changed the rhythm of our family, but it doesn't get to write every line of my story. Some of those lines are written in poetry. Some are painted on wood. Others are strung together, one bead at a time.
