Solution: Power performance mode was the issue. I needed to enable high performance power mode (read the first serato support link below, under heading 'Adjust Power Options'). This was not an option that was available to me so I had to manually enable this (watch =rdIE6Uzr2b0). I then had to go into the command prompt and enter the following (apostrophes not included) 'powercfg /s SCHEME_MIN'

My machines are hardly connected to the internet, unless my anti-virus software requires updates. I can manually download & install latest windows updates that are important but otherwise, i am happy to use these machines the way they are set up now.

I presumed this was a more than capable machine which would easily cope with Serato. My 10-year-old iMac has no discernible lag whatsoever using the same software. I've done the obvious optimisation settings in Serato, reducing resolution, altering the buffering settings etc and wondered if the graphics card has anything to do with it.
