Conspiracy Theories

On September 11, 2001, Muslim terrorists flew airliners into the World Trade Center (WTC) Twin Towers in New York City and into the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. They would have flown another airliner, Flight 93, into another target in D.C., but some of the passengers stormed the cockpit and fought with the terrorists, which tragically resulted in the plane crashing into the ground in Pennsylvania. The evidence that these events happened is overwhelming and undeniable.

However, so-called "9/11 Truthers" argue that 9/11 was an inside job, an elaborate conspiracy carried out by powerful elements in the U.S. Government. Some 9/11 Truthers offer the theory that Muslim terrorists did carry out the attacks, but that President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney knew the attacks were coming and allowed them to happen. In both theories, the motive was to whip up support for war in the Middle East and to enrich the military-industrial complex. For the most part, both theories claim that the WTC Twin Towers and WTC 7 were mainly destroyed with explosives that were planted in the buildings ahead of time and then detonated after the planes hit the Twin Towers. Many if not most 9/11 Truthers also claim that a missile, not an airliner, hit the Pentagon, and that the missile was fired by a U.S. military aircraft.

The 9/11 conspiracy theories are unscientific, illogical, and implausible. They are as irrational as the conspiracy theories that the Moon landings were faked and that the Holocaust was fabricated by Jews to gain sympathy for Zionism and the state of Israel.

It is especially unfortunate that most of those who peddle the 9/11 conspiracy theories also happen to believe in some valid conspiracy theories, which has the effect of causing some people to wrongly conclude that all conspiracy theories are not only invalid but are bizarre and frivolous, and that only uneducated or fringe people believe in any conspiracy theories.

My experience in dealing with 9/11 Truthers is that most of them are so emotionally invested in their theories that they are beyond persuasion, that no amount of evidence and logic, no matter how compelling, will cause them to repudiate their beliefs. Indeed, incredibly, many of them argue that the 9/11 conspiracy theories have been established beyond any doubt by scientific evidence, even though virtually all scientists reject them.
