The pieces are arranged such that the lowest on the page are the oldest
This piece came to be from a random sketch I started with zero intentions of committing- until it started to turn out really well. I had been planning on making an illustration from a non-canon "what-if" short I wrote, but I suprised myself with this one. The dominant color being a sort of soft yellow-orange, it seemed fitting to name it after a spice that color (while also serving as a fairly incognito name, and a bit of a silly joke)
This piece nearly gave me a heart attack though. When I tried to continue working on it, my computer was lagging so bad I had to uninstall a lot of software. During this process, I restarted my computer and...guess what file corrupted. Was it divine intervention? A message to cease? No, it was just CSP being stupid. After experiencing every known emotion in twenty minutes I located the back up files and whew. Crisis averted. Check out the speedpaint in the video tab!
I like to start all my pieces out with a loose sketch like this, then add some grayscale shading just to get a basic idea of how things will look. Sometimes I end up redrawing a sketch four to five times if I'm unhappy with it. And sometimes I get carried away and add details I know I'll cover with flats...
Here I've made an extremely vague mock up of the lighting scenario. I like to do this early on in the piece so I can adjust the composition. Which I did end up doing here, following a few well known rules such as "the rule of thirds" and using lighting as a tool to direct attention to the focal point.
After combining the color mock up layer (adjusting opacity some) and adding flats underneath with a little shading I shouldn't have added yet (oops) you can get a really clear idea of how the final might look! The rest is details details details, clean up, and then rendering.
A Bit of Alone Time
These set of sketches were both fun and frustrating to draw, especially the second one here. I intially went with a different facial angle for Vlade (spiky hair) but the pose he was in made it incredibly difficult to look natural...so I ended up copping out with a side profile. One of these days I'll get it!
The concept here was that they were able to have some time to rest in a four-walled room for once, as typically they're on the road. So naturally one takes advantage of the facilities...
Did you know I almost made this an explicit piece? Intially, the idea was to explore mer/half mer reproductive anatomy because that was something I wanted to expand on during Mermay. Of course, when that fell flat the much more wholesome idea of a nap emerged. I'm glad I made that decision, because it resulted in probably my favorite digital piece of that year! (And it was one I could actually share.)
I have a video posted of my process! Check it out if you like in the process videos tab :)
