Maps for Estonia

This page exhibits maps about Estonia in various terms and will go on collecting them.

Movement

The aim of this map is to show population movement in Estonia, which could further indicate the demographic and socio-economic distribution all around Estonia. Data came from Mobility Lab of University of Tartu and included geographic information of territorial communities together with numeric value of the movers.

Crime

The map aims to exhibit the spatial distribution of frequency of crimes in Estonia. Original data were the locations of crimes all over Estonia 2012 from Estonian Police and Border Guard Board. The data were imported into QGIS as point layer. The symbology of layer was then set to make Heatmap as type. Adjusting thr kernel radius and maximum value, the final map was made.

Sea Level Changing

Estonia is a country closely connected to the Baltic Sea. The coastline and coast cities have been long co-existing with the influence of sea. In the past, it was the uplifts that brought more land. 7500 years ago, Estonia was not the shape as today anymore. The west coastline was a lot backwards. The Hiuumaa island nearly didn’t exist. However, in the future, it will be the floods that ask the land back. The map above was made based on the fact that the Litorina points had elevation of 0m 7500 years ago. So the interpolation of the present elevation of those points generates the raster of the elevation changes during the 7500 years.
