The Sensory Scouts community is led by it's directors, Shelby and Keith Musgrove, and inspired by their seven year old, August. During the pandemic, their family underwent a metamorphisis in which they sold their home, discovered their uniquely wired brains are AuDHD, quit their jobs, took an exodus out of traditional schooling for their kiddo, and reignited their love and passion for nature. Since then, they have sought a form of education which awakens their curiosities and empowers them to live creatively. They have united with Three Ponds Community to create a wholesome environment for children to flourish with their parents. Through gardening, tree climbing, swimming, farm animal care, and sensory profile development, Keith and Shelby are uncovering a magical way of what it means to raise a family.
"I am a creative with a BFA in Fine Arts and a minor in International Studies. As an artist and writer, I've always found solitude and peace in nature. Some of my fondest memories as a child are investigating rollie pollie colonies and climbing trees. I believe nature has a way of combing over the stress and pressures of our society and making the mind quiet, at ease. In nature, my soul is ignited with curiousity, wonder, and creativity. I am passionate about creating access to nature and parental support to other families, especially neurodivergent families. We discovered we are all neurodivergent in the middle of the pandemic. We love eachother deeply but there was constant meltdowns and chronic stress. We researched what was the best way to manage sensory-overload, anxiety, and depression for neurodivergents. Enviroment was the number one contributing factor for improving the quality of life. It didn't take long for Keith and I to reflect on our childhoods and how crucial access to nature was to our development and emotional regulation. We evaluated our current lives and started making changes to suit our brain-types. It was challenging but oh, so rewarding. We long to share this with other families. Being connected to nature and in alignment with what we each need for our individual sensory profiles is such a simple but impactful salve. One, that if we venture into collectively, will have an substantial impact on humanity."
"I am a former public school teacher with a bachelors degree in theology and spiritual development. While working in our traditional school systems for seven years, I experienced first hand the limited impact our educational systems have on adolescent development. I find fulfillment in teaching others how to use body movement to discover one's limits and capabilities. I personally have a physical disability which empowers me to move vulnerably in our forest and strengthen my body and mind. I think humans are naturally wired to learn and test their physical and mental abilities so they can develop courage, confidence, and curiosity. At Sensory Scouts, we encourage individual curiousty through child-led learning embedded in nature. Our community holds firm to the idea that everyone learns on their own time. We all sprout, fruit, and pollinate with mother nature's seasons on our own timing, through our divine curiousity. I love connecting with neurotypical and neurodiverse families by helping them learn how to communicate with one another more affectively. Additionally, I find value in communal relationships with families that seek honest accountability and continual self development. If we desire a better world for our future generations, we have to be willing to clean up our mess and strive for change from within. "
"I enjoy playing outside, jumping on the trampoline, wrestling, and dancing to my Lighting Bolt playlist on Spotify. My favorite animal on the land is Olaf because he makes interesting and funny goat sounds. My current dream is to become a LEGO Engineer because I am a LEGO master. My favorite things to build are dragon sets with different mini-figures and shelters for the good guys and bad guys. I think nature is changing the earth so humans do not destroy it any longer."
