Nestled within the captivating Karst upland, our campus is embraced by a 25-acre park, affording a mesmerizing vista of the Gulf of Trieste. Trieste is the capital and largest city of the autonomous region of Friuli Venezia Giulia.

A seaport at the top of the Adriatic, Trieste functioned for hundreds of years as the meeting place of a rich brew of cultures, among these Mediterranean (including Italian) and Middle-European (including Austro-Hungarian). Its multi-variegated history is still palpable in the architecture, the languages, the cafès, and restaurants. In a National Geographic article entitled Trieste, a historic Mediterranean crossroads, is seeing a modern renaissance, the city is aptly described as an "overlooked cultural gem in northern Italy."

Nowadays, Trieste is a City of Knowledge, hosting more than 30 research and training centers. It is the European city with the highest density of researchers (37.1 of every 1,000 workers are involved in research). It was nominated European City of Science in 2020, hosting Euroscience Open Forum.

On the occasional free evening, one favored meeting spot is an osmiza. Unique to the hills surrounding Trieste, these open-air taverns serve rustic, homemade farm cuisine.
