If you want a neutral, wide soundstage for critical listening and mixing in a quiet room, choose Sennheiser HD 560S; if you need a lighter weight, extended cable options, and a slightly warmer bass response for long studio sessions, choose Audio-Technica ATH-R50X. While neither of these open-back designs is suitable for active construction work environments due to their lack of noise isolation and wireless capability, understanding the specific acoustic strengths of each helps you decide which tool fits your actual workflow, whether that involves professional audio production or simply enjoying music with high fidelity.
• Sennheiser HD 560S: Delivers an exceptionally linear frequency response with a wide, articulate soundstage ideal for analytical listening, but requires a dedicated amplifier to reach its full potential due to higher impedance.
• Audio-Technica ATH-R50X: Offers a lightweight, comfortable build with a warm, accurate midrange and included cables of varying lengths, making it a versatile choice for mobile studio setups without needing heavy amplification.
• Best for the Audiophile: Choose the Sennheiser if you prioritize absolute neutrality and detail retrieval above all else.
• Best for the Producer: Choose the Audio-Technica if you value comfort over long hours and the convenience of included long cables for a portable mixing rig.
The Sennheiser HD 560S is engineered specifically for the listener who demands honesty from their equipment. This is not a headphone designed to color the music with artificial bass boosts or treble sparkle; instead, it aims to present the recording exactly as the artist intended. The core of this philosophy lies in its E.A.R. (Ergonomic Acoustic Refinement) angled driver alignment. By tilting the drivers, Sennheiser recreates the optimal triangular listening position found in high-end loudspeaker setups. This design choice creates a soundstage that feels surprisingly wide and three-dimensional, allowing you to pinpoint the exact location of instruments within a mix without needing any special room treatment.
For the analytical audio enthusiast, the HD 560S offers a level of transparency that is rare at its price point. With a frequency range spanning from 6 Hz to 38 kHz, this headphone covers the entire audible spectrum and extends well beyond it. The result is a detailed presentation where every nuance of a performance becomes audible. Whether you are comparing different remasters of a classic album or checking the quality of a new streaming format, the HD 560S provides the dependable A/B comparison capabilities that serious listeners require. The velour earpads contribute significantly to the "barely there" feel, ensuring that contact points remain soft even during extended gaming sessions or marathon listening periods. The open-back design ensures the ventilated cups stay cool, preventing the heat buildup common in closed-back models.

However, this commitment to accuracy comes with specific requirements. The HD 560S features an impedance of 120 ohms. This is significantly higher than many consumer headphones and means that plugging them directly into a phone, laptop, or standard portable player will likely result in low volume and a lack of dynamic control. To truly unlock the potential of these transducers, you will need a dedicated headphone amplifier or a high-quality audio interface. If you are looking for a plug-and-play solution for casual use on the go, this requirement might be a dealbreaker. Furthermore, because they are open-back, they offer zero isolation. Sound leaks out easily, and outside noise enters freely. This makes them unsuitable for noisy environments like a busy workshop or a job site. They are strictly for controlled, quiet spaces where you can focus entirely on the audio without distraction.
The Audio-Technica ATH-R50X takes a slightly different approach, focusing heavily on ergonomics and practical utility for the modern producer. At just 207 grams, these are among the lightest reference headphones available, a feature that matters immensely when you are wearing them for eight-hour shifts in a studio. The headband has been redesigned to distribute weight evenly, working in tandem with replaceable velour earpads to ensure that fatigue sets in much later than with heavier competitors. The fully open-back design allows unrestricted airflow, which eliminates internal resonance and delivers extremely quick transient response. This means the attack and decay of sounds are rendered with speed and precision, providing a natural, spacious sound akin to speaker monitors.
Where the ATH-R50X shines in terms of usability is in its connectivity and accessories. Unlike the Sennheiser, which often requires you to source your own cables or adapters, the Audio-Technica package includes two detachable cables: one measuring 3.0 meters (9.8 feet) and another at 1.2 meters (3.9 feet). Both feature a 2.5 mm twist-lock connector at the left earcup, which secures the connection firmly against accidental pulls—a small but vital detail for anyone moving around a studio floor. The inclusion of a gold-plated 3.5 mm mini-plug and a 6.3 mm adapter means these headphones are ready to connect to almost any piece of gear immediately upon unboxing. This versatility makes them an excellent choice for those who might move between a fixed desk setup and a more mobile recording environment.
In terms of sound signature, the R50X leans towards a warm, accurate midrange with extended bass that is still controlled. While it shares the open-back characteristic of leaking sound, its lower impedance of 50 ohms and sensitivity of 93.3 dB make it much easier to drive than the Sennheiser. You can run these headphones off a standard audio interface or even a powerful portable DAC/amp without needing massive power reserves. The frequency response of 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz covers the standard audio spectrum perfectly for mixing and mastering tasks. However, users should note that while the bass is extended, it is tuned for accuracy rather than the deep, rumbling sub-bass some consumers prefer for casual pop music enjoyment. These are tools for work, designed to reveal flaws in a mix so they can be corrected, not to make a track sound "bigger" artificially. Like the Sennheiser, the open-back design dictates that they must be used in a private space. If you are trying to find a bluetooth headset for construction work or active noise cancelling bone conduction headphones for a loud job site, neither of these options will serve you; they are designed for silence and precision, not for survival in a chaotic environment.

After weighing the technical specifications and the intended use cases for both units, I would personally buy the Audio-Technica ATH-R50X for my daily workflow. The combination of its incredibly light weight, the inclusion of a long cable, and its ability to be driven by almost any audio interface makes it the more practical tool for a working professional. While the Sennheiser HD 560S offers a marginally wider soundstage, the extra effort required to drive its higher impedance and the lack of included cabling add friction to the user experience. However, if your primary goal is purely critical listening in a dedicated, treated room and you already own a high-powered amp, the Sennheiser's analytical edge might sway you. Ultimately, for anyone needing reliable, comfortable, and versatile headphones for serious audio work, the Audio-Technica wins on pure utility. Just remember, neither of these is appropriate for construction work; you need specialized safety gear for that environment.
No, neither model is suitable for construction work. Both are open-back wired headphones that provide no noise isolation and cannot block out dangerous machinery noise. You need active noise cancelling bone conduction headphones or a certified safety headset for that environment.
Yes, the 120-ohm impedance of the HD 560S generally requires a dedicated headphone amplifier to achieve sufficient volume and proper dynamic control, whereas the Audio-Technica model can be driven by most standard interfaces.
The Audio-Technica ATH-R50X comes with two detachable cables (3.0m and 1.2m) and a carrying pouch, while the Sennheiser HD 560S typically ships with a single cable and a 6.3mm adapter, requiring you to purchase additional cables if you need longer runs.
