ONLINE TEACHING, LEARNING, ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION DURING THE LOCKDOWN DAYS: THE INDIAN SCENARIO

DATE: 04.09.2020.

TIME: 05-07 p.m.

THEME OF THE WEBINAR

In the present-day era of globalisation and technological advancement, online classes are not a new phenomenon. Mainly thanks to the Virtual classroom concept several modes and mediums of communication (Zoom, Google Meet, Google Classroom, Google Duo, Microsoft Teams App etc.) have proliferated and have been utilised for academic exchanges and interactions. In fact, many pundits see in them a viable alternative to real-time classes in the times to come.

In the current context, the importance of such online classes has increased to a considerable extent. The COVID-19 virus has unleashed a pandemic the world over, severely affecting all spheres of life. Maintaining physical distance to avoid contact and in turn contamination has become the only way to safety and a series of lockdown periods has been clamped by the Government to control the spread of the pandemic. But it has impacted on the education sector not simply because it has immensely disturbed the Academic Calendar and forced the University Grants’ Commission as well as the Higher Education Institutions to be back to the drawing board, but also because it has put a question mark over the immediate academic career of numerous students of the country.

Thus in order to work out a balance between physical security and dissemination of learning, the educational institutions have resorted to the online mode as the only feasible method to make up for the precious time lost as well as keep the students academically updated. Consequently, the sequence of lockdown periods over a prolonged stretch of time has seen a spurt of online classes at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Though sincere efforts have been made to recover much of the ground lost, doubts linger about reaching out to a large portion of the student community which remains out of bounds for proper and uninterrupted communication as well as about whether the online method can be a worthy substitute for real-time classroom teaching. Lack of proper methods of evaluation has also added to the confusion and has created a kind of academic impasse.

The present Webinar seeks to address the efficacy of the online mode of teaching and learning, to assess the benefits accrued over the lockdown and carve out better ways for the academic benefit of the student community in a continuing phase of uncertainties.
