This gorgeous three Palitana copper reeded (Bass Female Male) harmonium is made from the most beautifully natural finished grained Indian teakwood and is ‘New Old Stock’, having never been played from Circa 2010. To eliminate the traditionally used metal brackets that provide structural strength to the body of the harmonium but detracts from the inherent beauty of the wood, it takes 10 days for our craftsmen to cut and fit beautiful dovetail joints. All the edges are intentionally rounded for a soft inviting feel.
The front pump bellow and base of this harmonium are adorned with hand carved floral patterns. Instead of the normal metal plates that protect the bump bellow from wear and tear, we use inlaid African ebony wood triangles for strength and beauty. When thinking of various ways to modify the basic harmonium design to promote/enhance sound, the round top gave birth. The idea was to create more, volume of space, within the tone projecting area for sounds to come together in a mixed harmonized manner. This rounded top is hand molded and fitted from a solid piece of wood. The grill or Joli design work hand carved, edges tooled for a soft appearance. We commissioned a family living outside Delhi to hand craft each white key for this harmonium. These white bone keys give a most wonderful tactile response and feel, the black keys handmade from teakwood.
This harmoniums was part of a generation of Biba concert harmoniums that were created with a round tone chamber (aka Jali). This unique innovative shape is the result of skilled craftsmanship and quality materials.
