For WashU’s annual YES Design Competition, my team and I drew inspiration from graduation tassels to symbolically honor the work of the graduating Class of 2026. Working with limited square footage, we sought to create a system that maximizes visibility, spacial efficiency, and visitor engagement.

Layered Unveilings, as the project came to be known, welcomes visitors with a tasseled curtain, unveiling the celebratory exhibition within. Beyond it, two distinct spaces are revealed: an isolated walkway, meant to exhibit students’ larger drawings, and an open gallery that presents student projects in semi-private pockets. The tasseled curtains add a sense of ambiguity to each row, fostering deeper engagement as visitors move from one display to another.
