Clay has the ability to replicate natural forms beautifully. My final assignment in a ceramics class was to conceive a sculpture inspired by nature. This prompted me to search the web for textures and shapes that I found attractive. I fell in love with the two images below and meshed them together in a sketch. The curves in my sculpture mimic those found on the plant (left) and its texture replicates the nut-like object (right).
These bowls sample the ocean's color palette. The vibrant blues and serene greens take me back to the beaches from my trips to the Dominican Republic.
The lip of this vase mimics the form of a flower, flowing out from the center and curving at the circumference. Its simple body does not distract from the lip, rather accentuating it. I chose a white glaze to keep the focus on the form of this piece.
The task of designing a mixed-media project brought about the idea of a wind chime. The shell-like shape of the ceramic parts optimizes the sound created by the collision with the beads. Jute rope holds everything together and allows each piece to dance in the wind.
I crafted this mortar and pestle with the intent of having it become a ritual object within my household. Glazing designates which parts are to come in contact with food. Outside of this context, however, I wanted it to be imposing and to stand on its own. The black exterior accomplishes this.
