Mindfulness is paying attention to the present moment as it is. It is learning how to respond wisely to things that happen to you, rather than just reacting. Watch the following video:
2. Reflection: Have you tried mindfulness before? What was your experience like? If you have not tried it, are you willing to? Why or why not?
3. Activity: Try practicing mindfulness. Here are some steps to start:
Sit somewhere comfortable. Close your eyess fully, partially, or gaze at something stable. Start the timer when you are ready.
Use your ears to listen to your breathing. Pay attention to the feeling of the chair you are sitting in. Do you smell anything? Is any part of your body achy or tired or jittery?
If your mind starts to think about things from the past or things upcoming in the future, bring it back to the present moment.
After, reflect on the experience. What emotion are you feeling? What thoughts do you have? Do you feel more focused and calm? Is this something you would do again?
