Taking Up Space In A World That Tells Us To Be Small
This is another class I created that focuses on self-confidence, empowerment, and resilience. We live in a society that often encourages people to take up the least amount of space possible, not only with their bodies, but also with their thoughts and opinions. Teens and pre-teens, especially, are not often taught to take up space and use their voices. Instead, they are encouraged to behave, follow the rules, be respectful, and stay quiet. Over time, this expectation can cause them to either shrink back or act out. The course, Taking Up Space in a World That Tells Us to Be Small, teaches students to appreciate their bodies and minds for what they are rather than feeling pressure to mold themselves to fit society’s preconceived norms. The goal of this socio-emotional learning (SEL) course is to provide a platform for students to build strength and resilience while equipping them with the tools to feel empowered, use their voices, practice self-respect, take up space, and be unapologetically authentic.
Note: This class is designed for ages 12 and up, and the modules should be taught in order.
