A magnitude 9.0 megathrust earthquake occurred on December 26, 2004 just off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. The earthquake happened on the interface of the India and Burma plates. Approximately 1200 kilometers of the plate boundary slipped as a result of the earthquake. The tsunamis generated by the earthquake inundated the Indian ocean coasts with waves up to 30 meters high and killed about 230,000 - 280,000 people in 14 countries.
