SEGUNDO CAMINO-MOGRO
I am a Ph.D. in Economics (Cum Laude) from Universidad Complutense de Madrid (Spain), where I also earned an MSc. in Economics (2015). I hold degrees in Economics and Business Administration from Universidad Católica de Santiago de Guayaquil (Ecuador). My doctoral dissertation, “Essays on the determinants of productivity and firm performance: Evidence from Ecuador,” examined firm-level drivers of productivity and performance, with an emphasis on endogenous determinants shaping business outcomes.
I currently serve as Associate Professor at IAEN (School of Public Economics and Strategic Sectors), and as an Invited Professor and Associate Researcher at ESAI Business School – Universidad Espíritu Santo. My work sits at the intersection of rigorous applied research and policy-relevant decision-making, leveraging empirical evidence to inform productivity-enhancing reforms, regulatory design, and public-sector performance.
My professional experience includes senior roles in Ecuador’s public institutions, such as Economic and Political Advisor at the National Assembly of Ecuador, and National Director of the Economic Research & Cooperation Department at the Superintendencia de Compañías, Valores y Seguros (SCVS) in Guayaquil. I also served as Director of Strategic Planning (Mobility) at the Municipality of Quito – City Research Institute, supporting strategic planning and evidence-based policy in urban mobility. Internationally, I was a Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Coimbra (CeBER) and an External Consultant for the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB) in the Infrastructure and Energy (INE/ENE) division.
I have taught and collaborated with a wide range of universities (Universidad Metropolitana del Ecuador, Universidad del Río, ECOTEC University, Universidad Católica de Santiago de Guayaquil (UCSG), Universidad Agraria del Ecuador (UAE), Universidad Politécnica Salesiana Sede Guayaquil, Universidad de las Américas (UDLA), Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador (PUCE), Escuela Superior Politécnica del Litoral (ESPOL), Universidad Estatal de Milagro (UNEMI), Universidad Técnica Particular de Loja (UTPL)) and graduate programs in Ecuador, including teaching roles in MBA and specialized master’s programs (finance, circular economy, economics and business), and I regularly contribute to academic and applied policy discussions.
Research interests: firm productivity and performance, competition and market dynamics, regulation and enforcement, and public economics—particularly where public policy and firm outcomes interact. I am especially interested in integrating tools from public economics with firm-level productivity analysis to generate actionable insights for policymakers and institutions.
