About Us
Founded in 1994, SEEDS had one ultimate goal: building the resilience of people exposed to disasters. For the last 26 years, we have been enabling this through practical solutions for disaster readiness, response and rehabilitation. Our approach has involved grafting innovative technology on to traditional wisdom.
Over this time, our dedicated team has partnered families affected by disasters and climate emergencies in a variety of ways. Disaster survivors have had schools, homes and community infrastructure restored and upgraded. Marginalised communities have gained access to clean water, sanitation and health facilities. Nature-based solutions have been designed to help adapt to climate change in ecologically-sensitive areas. We have also invested in skill building, partnerships and advocacy to build the long-term resilience of at-risk communities. Our work has reached families across India and Nepal.
SEEDS continues to advocate for and work with communities across Asia to build a safer and more sustainable world.
Our Cause
Evergreen English School, based in Pokhriabong Tea Estate in Darjeeling, was established in 1983 to cater to the educational needs of children from surrounding tea gardens. However, due to multiple reasons, this school was on the verge of shutting down in 2018. Thanks to Mr. Dipendra Khati , who felt so strongly for the cause, decided to quit his job in Bahrain and step in for two reasons - the children in the area deserve quality education, and being a son of parents who also worked in a tea garden he knew how very deprived these children are. Shutting down this school would mean another door of opportunity slamming on their faces.
Instead of focusing on mere classroom-based education, they focused on developing a holistic educational system that would help bring out the best in these children. The result was visible, not only among the children, but also among the parents, who are enthusiastic about the future of their children.
Due to this lockdown, many of the tea gardens in Darjeeling refused to pay their workers wages for the lockdown period. Seeing their plight, the school fees was waived off, but the teachers and non teaching staff were paid their salaries. At this juncture, there just aren't enough funds to keep the school afloat!
We urge you to participate in our cause by bidding for these beautiful paintings. All of your contributions will help sustain the running of the school after these tough times are past us and to provide digital means of education in the interim. We need your support to transform the lives of these children and pave way for their bright futures!
