The SEED Foundation partners with states, districts, organizations, and communities to design, develop and launch college-preparatory boarding schools that unlock opportunities for students to achieve success in college and beyond. SEED’s innovative educational model integrates a rigorous academic program with a nurturing boarding program, which teaches life skills and provides a safe and secure environment.
For more than 25 years, The SEED Foundation has been a pioneer in education as the first and longest running network of public, college-preparatory boarding schools. SEED has secured numerous legislative appropriations wins, built multiple strong state, local, and public-private partnerships, secured philanthropic support, and utilized complex financing vehicles like New Market Tax Credits to grow into a powerful four-school network with campuses in Washington, D.C.; Baltimore, Maryland; Miami, Florida; and Los Angeles, California.
Building on a quarter century of results, The SEED Foundation is poised to translate our expertise into local, fundable, sustainable plans to bring transformative educational models to more communities. We connect our past achievements to future possibilities, from concept to opening day, providing the programming, policy, finance, facilities, and operations blueprint for communities to launch public boarding school options where all students have the access and support they need to achieve their true potential.

OUR TRACK RECORD: A HISTORY OF SUCCESS
Case Study 1: The SEED School of Los Angeles County
Our SEED LA campus stands as a powerful symbol of community rebirth, built on a site left scarred by the 1992 Los Angeles civil unrest. Transforming this historically underinvested area required a unique coalition. We forged innovative partnerships with Los Angeles County and LA Metro and leveraged complex financial tools like New Market Tax Credits to build a state-of-the-art school that is designed to serve 400 students. This project showcases our expertise in uniting public and private stakeholders to bring profound, restorative investment that expands opportunities in historically underserved communities.
Case Study 2: The SEED School of Miami
Successfully launching a school in Florida required navigating a unique political and social climate. Our team was instrumental in securing state-level legislation to sustainably fund the school, demonstrating our ability to adapt our model and build coalitions in new environments. The school’s development was a multi-phased success. SEED Miami first opened in 2014 on the campus of Florida Memorial University, allowing us to establish a strong community presence while developing a permanent home. In 2019, we broke ground on that permanent campus, featuring dormitories for over 300 students. This project highlights our expertise in long-range planning and complex site development, ensuring a lasting foundation for student success.
OUR SIX PILLARS OF SUCCESS
Every successful SEED school is built upon a solid foundation. Through decades of experience, we have identified Six Pillars of Success—the essential ingredients required to transform the vision of a public boarding school into a lasting reality for a community. These pillars form the blueprint for every new school we help launch.
How do we determine if our Six Pillars can be established in your community? That journey begins with our Phase 1 Feasibility Study.
The Feasibility Study (Phase 1): Your Blueprint for Success
This collaborative, twelve-month process is the critical first step, designed specifically to conduct a detailed analysis of each pillar. Through qualitative and quantitative research, site visits, and extensive interviews with key stakeholders, the study assesses the opportunities and challenges of establishing a public college prep boarding school. It provides a data-driven blueprint that gives you the confidence and strategic direction needed to move forward.
CUSTOMIZED EXPANSION SUPPORT: OUR MENU OF OFFERINGS
Beyond the comprehensive Phase 1 study, we offer a flexible menu of targeted services. Partners can select specific strategic deliverables to support their unique expansion goals:
Community Support: Stakeholder Engagement Report, community partnership toolkit, and outreach templates.
Operational Funding: Financial sustainability plan and funding model template.
Private Funding: Comprehensive funding strategy, sustainability plan, and proposal templates.
Site Selection: Site feasibility study, readiness checklist, timeline, and financing strategy.
Private Financing: Loan application and partnership agreement support, plus proposal templates.
Leadership: Leadership curriculum, KPI framework, evaluation tools, and board management toolkit.
OUR UNIQUE VALUE
For those that believe in the transformative power of a public, college-preparatory boarding school, The SEED Foundation is the essential partner to turn that vision into a reality. We are the only organization with the specialized expertise to navigate the complex journey—from concept to opening day and beyond—ensuring a sustainable, high-impact school for the students who need it most.
Our distinct advantages are:
The Power of the Boarding Model: Our 24-hour learning environment is our core differentiator. It provides a stable, safe, and ambitious community where students receive integrated academic, social, and emotional support around the clock. This immersive model is uniquely effective in preparing students for the rigors of college and beyond.
Commitment to Serving Resilient Students: We are unapologetically focused on students who possess immense potential but face significant obstacles. Our entire model is intentionally designed to provide the structure, support, and opportunity that allow these resilient young people to unlock their talents and achieve their dreams.
Mastery of Stakeholder & Political Management: A great school model is not enough. Success requires securing long-term, sustainable public funding, which demands sophisticated political navigation. Our track record in Washington, D.C., Maryland, Florida, and Los Angeles County proves our unique ability to manage key stakeholders, champion necessary legislation, and build the financial foundation for a school that lasts.
A Proven Process: We can manage every facet of development—financing, site selection, academic programming, and community engagement. This end-to-end expertise removes the guesswork and mitigates risk for our partners, allowing them to focus on championing the school within their community.
A COLLABORATIVE PARTNERSHIP
A partnership with SEED is a deeply collaborative venture. We bring a proven educational model, a robust operational framework, and decades of expertise. Our community partners bring their local knowledge, relationships, passion, and a shared commitment to transforming students' lives. Together, we will build a school that will become a beacon of opportunity for generations.
