A Lédger® Hardware Wallet is a physical device designed to protect the private keys associated with your cryptocurrency accounts. Unlike a traditional software wallet, a hardware wallet keeps the keys isolated within dedicated security hardware and requires physical approval when signing supported transactions. Ledger describes its devices as signers because their primary role is to securely approve transactions.
A hardware wallet does not literally store your cryptocurrency. Your assets remain recorded on their respective blockchains, while the device protects the private keys used to control those assets.
Ledger hardware wallets use a Secure Element to generate and protect private keys. The device also provides a secure display for reviewing transaction information before approval.
Private-key protection: Keys are kept within the hardware device.
Physical transaction approval: Supported transactions require confirmation on the device.
Secure display: Transaction details can be reviewed directly on the hardware wallet.
PIN protection: A PIN helps prevent unauthorized use of the physical device.
Multiple device options: Ledger's current hardware-wallet range includes models such as Nano X, Nano S Plus, Flex, and Stax.
Select a Ledger hardware wallet that matches your requirements. Consider factors such as display type, connectivity, portability, and compatibility with your preferred crypto assets.
Tip: Purchase through Ledger's official store or an authorized reseller and avoid suspicious marketplaces or unofficial sellers.
Download Ledger Wallet, formerly known as Ledger Live, from Ledger's official website. The application is available for supported desktop and mobile platforms and provides the software interface for managing compatible accounts and applications.
Connect your Ledger device and follow the instructions displayed by the official software and hardware wallet.
During initialization:
Create a PIN directly on the device.
Allow the device to generate your Secret Recovery Phrase.
Carefully record the words in the correct order.
Complete the verification process shown on the device.
Your Secret Recovery Phrase is extremely important because it can restore access to your wallet. Ledger advises users to keep the phrase secure and private. Never photograph it, upload it to cloud storage, or enter it into an online form.
Never share your recovery phrase with anyone. Legitimate Ledger support should not ask you to disclose the complete phrase.
Use Ledger Wallet's My Ledger section to install applications for supported cryptocurrencies. Once installed, you can add compatible accounts and use the wallet according to the instructions provided by Ledger.
When you initiate a transaction through Ledger Wallet, the transaction information is sent to your hardware device for review. Check the destination address and other important details on the device's secure display before approving it.
If everything is correct, physically confirm the transaction. The device signs it using the private key protected inside the Secure Element, after which the signed transaction can be broadcast to the blockchain.
Download software only from official Ledger sources.
Keep your device PIN private.
Verify transaction details on the hardware wallet.
Never reveal your Secret Recovery Phrase.
Avoid unofficial recovery websites and support accounts.
Keep your recovery backup protected offline.
Install firmware and software updates through official Ledger channels.
Be cautious of phishing emails, fake applications, and impersonation attempts.
A Lédger® Hardware Wallet adds a dedicated physical security layer to crypto self-custody. Its Secure Element, device-based transaction approval, PIN protection, and companion software work together to help protect private keys. For the best security, always use official Ledger resources and keep your Secret Recovery Phrase completely private.
