The Fashion of Techno is about ideology

Techno and rave culture is the only existing modern counterculture, one of the main attributes of which is appearance and fashion. (Salamone, 2022) Since historically techno culture arose as a result of the desire of progressive youth to differ from the older generation and express their beliefs. This underground movement has always had a gloomy tone due to the lifestyle of the participants, however most important is that it has never split into certain physical groups.

The fashion of techno was always about representing the ideology, not the status or background of ravers. This unique trait was inspiring fashion designers especially in the 2010s to create a unique look that has many well-known style decisions such as dark colors and ragged complex silhouettes. One of the most well-known youth generations designer Raf Simons created his entire career by representing this fight of younger generations for their beliefs. His unique style at that time represented his support for beliefs for which youth were fighting and they were willing to buy his cloth. In the 2010s many high fashion designers such as Marc Jacobs, Virgil Abloh, Matthew Williams, Daniel Lee, Martine Rose, Demna (etc.) got inspired by him and started to transfer their beliefs to runway shows. As ravers found the support and connection to those designers they started to wear this difficult-to-style cloth for the events where they knew that they would find the followers - raves. The way how we see the fashion of techno now is just because of this huge movement that happened at fashion weeks in the early 2010s, however, it became even more brutal and complex. As techno fashion exists as a distinctive sign of rave culture, it has some specific recognizable elements, such as dark shades, ragged pieces of cloth, complex silhouettes which usually are starchy, or a mix of baggy oversize cloth. The Jewellery and accessories play a really important role as they follow certain specific criteria and it's the most highlighting element. Most people recognize raves by ultra futuristic sunglasses and huge earrings that shine and reflect the sharp hard lights of the party.

However, for you as a raver, it is not necessary to directly follow those rules. Each of these elements mainly exists separately and not all together, plus the style of techno is easy to combine with daily street-style cloth which is trendy right now. Ravers use those elements to express their personality and mix them in such a way that it will keep their individuality. The fashion of techno has to look futuristic and be up to date with current fashion trends as it is youth culture, which fights for their ideologies with previous generations. The look and appearance are exaggerated in order to make it challenging for adults. You do not need to be representative of a certain racial, ethnic, or upper-class group, you have to be on the agenda, fight for your beliefs, and express your uniqueness.
