DepEd made the pronouncement after President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said that the govenment is now looking for ways to bring back the school calendar to its old schedule as soon as possible, last April 10, 2024.
Students and teachers are now experiencing the order no. 003 series of DepEd where it is expected that by the school year 2027-2028; the school calendar will be back from August-May to June-March.
“Hangga’t maaari gusto natin ibalik sa dati dahil may consensus na talaga na mas maganda ‘yung dating schedule,” Marcos said in an ambush interview after the “Bagong Pilipinas Town Hall Meeting on Traffic Concerns” held in San Juan City.
“Hindi naman sinasabi na hindi natin gagawin next year or the year after that. Susubukan namin gawin, sa aming palagay baka mahirapan pa tayo ngunit hanggang may paraan gagawin natin ‘yung paraan para mapa-aga at mapabilis ang pagbalik sa normal schedule,” he added.
This was his response when asked for a comment on proposals from some groups to bring back, as soon as possible, the school vacation from April to May due to the scorching heat.
Heat Exhaustion

The Department of Health (DOH) said that it has so far recorded 118 cases of heat exhaustion all of whom are students caused by the summer heat in March.
The school calendar needed to be changed in many cases in the past due to weather and climate change.
Although it can’t be controlled by anyone, adjusting the school calendar is inefficient because it also messes with school schedules.
School days are not disrupt
When asked if the adjustment drastically changed the number of school days for SY 2023 to 2024, Poa responded that it did not, since only around seven to eight days were deducted in the current SY.
“Hindi ganoong karami ang nabasawasan sa school days natin; if I’m not mistaken, around seven to eight days lang ang nabawas for this SY,” said Poa.
“Hindi kasi talaga natin pwedeng bawasan kaagad ‘yon, dahil nga hindi naman matutunan ng bata lahat ng competencies na kailangan nila. That’s why magiging gradual shift,” he added.
He also assured the public that the adjustment was based on extensive consultations with several stakeholders, which also included ensuring that student and teacher competencies would not be affected.
DepEd’s timeline
Originally, the end of SY 2023 to 2024 was supposed to be June 14.
With the adjusted end of the school year, the school break this year will be from June 1 to July 26, 2024.
With the adjusted end of the school year, the school break this year will be from June 1 to July 26, 2024.
According to Poa, the decision to revert to the old academic calendar was based on “what majority of Filipinos want,” citing surveys and the results of their own field consultations.
“Generally everyone wants to go back to April May [break],” said Poa.
With the gradual revert to the old school calendar, Poa said DepEd expects an April 2 end of class in SY 2026 to 2027, with SY 2027 to 2028 expected to end around March.
