SEA- Teacher Journey
Crossing Cultures Abroad: A Journey of Growth and Learning
Crossing Cultures Abroad: A Journey of Growth and Learning
Hello everyone!
My name is Silfi Aliya Sakina. I am a student of English Education at Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta, and I am currently taking part in the SEA-Teacher program organized by SEAMEO. This program provides a meaningful opportunity for me to explore, teach, and broaden my understanding of education in an international, particularly at Aklan State University in the Philippines.
Through this blog, I will share my journey during the program, including classroom observations, lesson planning processes, and my direct teaching experiences. I will also share my personal reflections and my perspectives on the educational system in this environment.
I hope that my stories can offer useful insights into this experience and encourage others who are interested in following a similar path. Stay tuned, and I hope you find this journey inspiring and worthwhile!
Welcome to Aklan State University
Aklan State University (ASU) is one of the leading state universities in the Province of Aklan, Western Visayas, Philippines. In addition, ASU also has a well-equipped Laboratory High School that serves as a learning environment for students. The Laboratory High School at ASU plays an important role as a bridge between theory and practice in education. It is not only a place where secondary students receive quality learning, but also a training ground for university students to develop their teaching skills. Through real classroom experiences, observation, and educational research, this lab school supports innovative teaching methods while helping future educators gain hands-on experience in a dynamic learning environment.
Teaching System
The teaching system at ASU Labschool emphasizes interactive and student-centered learning through inquiry-based and project-based approaches. The ASU Laboratory School implements the MATATAG Curriculum, designed to develop students’ critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills, while also supporting their cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development. The Laboratory School offers secondary-level education structured into Year 1 to Year 4, which are equivalent to Grades 7 to 10 in the Philippine basic education system. These levels correspond to junior high school, where learners undergo a progressive development of knowledge and skills across core subjects such as English, Mathematics, Science, and Values Education.
Teaching Plan
I have independently developed my lesson plan for grade 10th with significant assistance from my mentor, Sir Mark. He has provided various relevant and useful references in developing the materials I have planned.
Additionally, I regularly consult with Sir Mark regarding my lesson plan to ensure its alignment and the quality of my teaching. His feedback and support are invaluable in enhancing my professional competence as an educator.
In my teaching plan, I integrate technology to enhance both the effectiveness and engagement of the learning process. One of the primary tools I use is PowerPoint (PPT), which I display on a television screen. The use of PPT allows me to present material in a more visual and engaging way, helping students better understand the concepts. Additionally, the larger display on the television makes it easier for all students to see and follow the material, whether it be images, graphics, or text. By combining visual elements with multimedia resources, students are more encouraged to participate and stay focused throughout the lesson. Overall, the integration of technology not only enriches the learning experience but also fosters greater student engagement and understanding.

Teaching Practice
The teaching practice process begins with classroom observation to gain a clear understanding of the learning dynamics. Then followed by teaching assistance and the development of lesson plans, which include designing instructions and selecting appropriate teaching materials. At this stage, cooperating teachers offer valuable feedback and constructive suggestions to improve the quality of the lesson plans.
Next, the prepared lesson plans are implemented in actual teaching practice, which is concluded with a final demonstration and feedback from the teachers. Throughout my teaching experience, I felt a deep sense of satisfaction, amazement, and happiness, creating meaningful and unforgettable moments. In addition, I gained a wide range of new experiences and knowledge that I had not previously acquired.
Chalenges and Problem Solving While Teaching in the Designated School
At first, I faced some challenges in teaching Grade 10 students, as this level represents the final year of junior secondary school, which is different from my usual teaching experience. In addition, I encountered subject materials that I had never taught before. However, I addressed this challenge by studying the material in advance and seeking references from guidebooks and other reliable resources. Furthermore, I actively consulted with my cooperating teacher to gain guidance, feedback, and solutions to the difficulties I encountered. Through thorough preparation, continuous learning, and support from my mentor, I was able to adapt well and carry out the teaching process effectively.
First, I want to express my sincere gratitude to Allah SWT for always easing my path and opening doors of opportunity throughout this journey. I'm also deeply thankful to my parents for allowing me to explore new experiences, always support and pray for me all the time. Also to Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta which has helped all participants in preparing all their needs while participating in this program, and truly grateful to my friends who continuously support me and always encourage me to do good things.
During my participation in the SEA-Teacher program in the Philippines, I was fully engaged in experiencing the local education system and culture firsthand. From the very beginning, I felt enthusiastic about learning how education is carried out in a different country. Each day in the classroom offered meaningful learning experiences that helped me enhance my teaching strategies and adapt to a new environment.
Beyond improving my teaching skills, I also developed a deeper understanding of the Philippine education system and its distinctive approach to engaging students. The students were friendly and highly motivated to learn, which inspired me to be more enthusiastic in my teaching.
Outside the classroom, I had the opportunity to introduce Indonesian culture to my peers, leading to insightful discussions about both the differences and similarities between our cultures. Building connections with educators and students from diverse backgrounds became one of the most memorable and rewarding parts of this program. Overall, this experience has enriched both my personal and professional growth, and I look forward to applying what I have learned in my future teaching career in Indonesia.
Last but not least, hopefully this program can expand collaboration with Southeast Asian countries. It can incorporated more technology-focused training in teaching, extend the internship period to enhance its effectiveness, establish a strong alumni network, and open opportunities for international collaboration among alumni, while also providing participants with more comprehensive cultural orientation.
