We offer surf lessons year-round, so no matter the season, you can hit the waves! However, we will warn you, winter surfing requires more commitment (and gear).
We recommend for first time surfers to reach out for lessons in spring to fall where the water is a little warmer and more comfortable for learning. If you are not interested in wearing any wetsuit, you can have lessons from July- early October.
The ocean temperature changes throughout the year, so having the right gear is key to staying comfortable. We supply the surfboards, but please check the information below regarding what wetsuit/gear is required to be purchased depending on the time of the year that you want to surf on Long Island.
If you are looking for surf lessons out of summer months (on the shoulder season) here’s an affordable option that past students have used:
📍 Recommended 3/2mm Wetsuit
Once you're geared up, we’re ready to book your lesson and get you riding waves! 🌊🏄♂️
The water is brutally cold during this time, so you’ll need a 5/4mm wetsuit, boots, and gloves to stay warm. If you're prepared for the cold, we’re happy to get you out there!
As the temperature warms up, you’ll be able to start shedding some layers. Many surfers wear a 4/3mm wetsuit with booties or continue to use their 5/4 wetsuit with booties until the end of May. By May, a 3/2mm wetsuit with booties is enough. As temperatures continue to rise, booties are no longer necessary, and by June, a 3/2mm wetsuit is all you need.
The water is warm enough that no wetsuit is needed! However, we recommend a rash guard to prevent rash burn. Additionally, for early morning or late evening sessions, some surfers prefer a 2mm shorty or farmerJane-cut wetsuit for a little extra warmth.
As the temperature drops and hurricane season comes to an end, you’ll need a 3/2mm wetsuit again and booties. By November, the water cools down quickly, and some surfers wear a 4/3mm wetsuit or jump into their 5/4mm wetsuit with booties for extra warmth.
