Extended kernels are typically created by third-party developers to enhance an older operating system, allowing it to run newer applications or drivers that would otherwise require a more modern version of Windows.

(Windows 7 SP1 users must install KB2533623 and KB2670838 updates for many programs to work.)
Applications with Notes:
- Anki 23.12.1: Restart if it shows a video driver error the first time.
- Blender 4.0.2: Use the portable version; installer doesn’t work.
- Chromium 124.0.6350.0: Aero title bar not supported. Use Supermium for better performance.
- Firefox 130.0.2: Same Aero issue as Chromium. Harmless error dialogs may appear when exiting.
- HandBrake 1.7.3: Requires .NET 6.0 runtime. Disable “Run each queued job in a separate worker process” in preferences.
- Life is Strange: True Colors 4.25: Works with VxKex; crashes harmlessly on exit.
- osu!(lazer) 2024.302.1.0: Version spoof to Windows 8.1 needed during install.
- Python 3.12.2: Use portable version unless absolutely necessary. Enable VxKex for executables.
