About me

Before taking my first art class in college, I thought an artist was someone who painted or drew realistically and beautifully. But as I progressed I was encouraged to take my art beyond this. I let my mind and body speak by applying paint to the canvas. I later found that I could do this with many mediums at once. I now mostly combine paint, rope, fabric, metal, natural elements, and beading to express the release of tension from my experiences throughout life. As a mixed-race Native Hawaiian woman, my artistic practice aims to explore the aspects of my identity that have influenced my experiences with the world. I discuss how I cope with the present challenges that Native Hawaiians face since the US occupation, how I've managed my life away from Hawai'i, and how I navigate generational trauma, mental health, and my idea of femininity. I explore these topics through a mixture of media such as painting, collage, sculpture, textile, photography, printmaking, and performance.Â
