The Southeast COMMIT is a network of mathematics faculty at colleges and universities across Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, and North and South Carolina, who are interested in using a variety of activity learning and inquiry-based teaching techniques in our classrooms. We bring a variety of different teaching styles and years of experience to this group including the use of POGIL, student presentations, and mastery-based learning.
We typically meet virtually once a month. Our programming includes scenarios to talk through, special guest speakers, talking about interesting articles, and social hours. We organized a special session at the MAA-SE meeting in March 2021 on “Inquiry Based Learning in Online and Socially Distanced Classrooms.” In Summer 2021, we held a one-day workshop where participants brought syllabi for Fall courses and worked collaboratively to envision teaching practices and policies for a new year.
