Vision and Mission (SD)
Rooted in God consciousness, we respond to the prophetic call to promote the new way of life initiated by Jesus to reach out to humanity with compassion particularly to the destitute.
SD-Sisters of the Destitute is a women religious congregation in Syro Malabar Church founded by Venerable Fr. Varghese Payappilly, a diocesian priest of Ernakulam Diocese in 1927. That time after the first world war people were in misery and starvation. The SD is anchored on Jesus Christ the compassionate Lord who, though rich, became poor so that by His poverty we might become rich(Cor.8:9).Thus SD has a special call and mission to share the salvific love of the Heavenly Father with all, particularly the destitute and the marginalized. God in His eternal plan selected Fr.Varghese Payappilly and set him apart bestowing upon him with special gifts to carry out his plan. He was strongly inspired by the Holy Spirit to start a religious congregation that would continue the mission of Christ by devotedly serving the poor, the aged and abandoned. Venerable Fr. Varghese Payappilly was) inspired by the words of the Gospel”Just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me” (Mt. 25:40) him, to found a Religious Institute to this end. The Providence of God inspired five young women- Thresia Mathew Kalaparambil of Kizhakkambalam,Thresia Ouseph Kuppiyil Edakkala of Kizhakkambalam, and Eliswa Anthony Mazhavancherry of Kizhakkambalam Pazhanganad, Rosa Anthony Mazhuvancherry of Kizhakkambalam and Thresia Anthony Oottancherry of Chunangamvely to dedicate themselves to the Lord in the service of the poor. The ArchBishop Mar Augustine Kandathil guided him to discern the will of God and gave him the permission and authorization to found the Congregation “Little sisters of the Poor ‘later known as Sisters of The Destitute’. This little flock comprising the Founder Fr. Varghese Payappilly and the zealous pioneers radiated the merciful love of Jesus Christ in and around Aluva in a manner so far unheard of. Though SD was planted on St Joseph’s mount in the soil of Chunangamveli, in course of time it branched out to different parts of India and abroad becoming the Good News to the poor and afflicted by self sacrificing service.
If the congregation started with five young women, now when she is close to the century, 1800 young women joined to live the Charism and serves as the streams of compassion in different parts of the world. Though SD started her service with serving the abandoned aged destitute she was very open to the needs of the time and her compassionate heart moved to the destitute brethren in, spiritual, physical, mental, intellectual, economical and social areas. SD spread her wings from the small boundary of a district in Kerala and a diocese to the five continents in the world and to the whole Catholic Church. Now she has 241 houses together in India, Nepal,Germany, Italy, USA, Madagascar, Switzerland, Latin America, Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia, and Uganda.
