About Us

Every community has organizations making a difference that many residents have never heard of. We believe these hidden community helpers deserve to be visible. By highlighting nonprofits of every size—from established organizations to small grassroots initiatives—we help San Diego residents discover the incredible work already happening in their own neighborhoods.

Mental health extends beyond clinical care. Housing, food security, transportation, education, healthcare access, financial stability, and meaningful social connections all shape well-being. We highlight organizations working across these areas because supporting mental health means supporting the whole community.

The "San Diego" in our name means every community matters. We intentionally feature organizations serving urban neighborhoods, suburban communities, mountain towns, desert communities, and rural East County because access to information should never depend on where someone lives.

Strong communities are built through participation. Whether someone volunteers, attends local events, donates, or simply learns about the organizations around them, every form of engagement strengthens San Diego's nonprofit ecosystem.

Research every organization before outreach.

Every featured organization begins with independent research. SDMHN reviews an organization's mission, services, eligibility requirements, locations, and publicly available resources to develop an accurate draft profile before making contact.

Building relationships through direct communication.

Once a draft profile is complete, SDMHN reaches out directly to the organization to introduce the project, explain our mission, and invite them to review their page before publication.

Accuracy comes first.

Organizations are encouraged to review all information—including services, contact details, program descriptions, and resource links—to ensure the published content is current, accurate, and representative of their work. SDMHN will not post a feature before contacting the organization. 

Turning information into awareness.

After verification, the organization receives a dedicated page within the SDMHN directory. The organization is then highlighted through SDMHN's weekly educational Instagram spotlight, introducing the community to the organization's mission, services, and impact.

Making resources easy to discover offline.

Each featured organization is included in SDMHN's monthly Connection Guide—a printable community resource highlighting local organizations, volunteer opportunities, and pathways to support across San Diego County. 

Connecting resources with the community.

Connection Guides are distributed through participating schools, libraries, and community partners, helping ensure residents can discover trusted local organizations whether they're searching online or browsing community spaces.
