Introduction
Hi. I'm Debra Godwin. For my self-directed learning opportunity, I elected to become certified in Microlearning Instructional Design (MID101) from Gnowbe and Build Your Skills as an Instructional Designer from LinkedIn Learning.
Purpose
The purpose of these self-directed learning exercises was for me to achieve a deeper understanding of effective instructional design processes and evaluation methods, including applying learner-focused microlearning practices and techniques, creating “mobile-first and mobile-responsive” design initiatives, using stories in training, storyboarding, video creation, ethical AI use, and successfully applying what I learned in both courses in a corporate training environment. Achieving these certifications will enable me to better adapt to the changing learning development landscape.
Rationale for Microlearning Instructional Design (MID101):
Prior to deciding on a topic to receive certification for, I explored numerous online microlearning and mobile learning websites to determine the level of need expected for this type of learning now and in the future. My rationale for pursuing the microlearning and mobile-first certification is based on the following research which shows:
“Mobile learning statistics show that microlearning is 17% more efficient, and the market is predicted to expand by $46.9 billion by 2024” (Lindner, 2023).
Microlearning is an effective way to provide content in a way that encourages engagement and fosters retention (Avalino, (2022).
”72.6% of internet users will access the web solely via their smartphones by 2025” and “time spent on smartphones is set to overtake the hours spent on accessing the internet from PC’s” (Handley, 2019).
“67% of American companies offered learning opportunities through smartphones in 2019” (Lindner, 2023).
As mobile phone use becomes more prevalent in eLearning, being able to adapt to the needs of the mobile phone learning environment as instructional designer becomes an important skill. Learning to implement the principles of micro-learning will help me better address the previously mentioned learner needs and to become a more valuable resource for a corporate learning development team.
Rationale for Build Your Skills as an Instructional Designer:
I selected this LinkedIn Learning curriculum to receive certification for because it serves as an interactive and supplemental resource to the theories, principles and skills I am learning about in the Educational Technology program. Each segment of the curriculum is taught by leading Instructional Design professionals who share their expertise in the field of ID and provide valuable insight on becoming a more effective instructional design professional.
