Session Description: Accessibility is more than a checklist; it is a shared responsibility that thrives when it becomes a collective campus practice. This fast-paced, multi-part lightning session merges two critical perspectives on digital belonging: creating an "accessibility-first" institutional culture and empowering students as inclusive content creators. We will explore how MiraCosta’s Online Education team partnered with Student Accessibility Services to embed Universal Design for Learning (UDL) into daily instructional practices, while also addressing the vital need to teach students accessibility basics so their own peer-to-peer contributions are inclusive. By bridging the gap between faculty professional development and student action, this session demonstrates how we can move from simple awareness to a sustainable, community-wide culture of equity in online education.

Presenter(s): Robert Kelley, MiraCosta College
Session Description: Together, we will begin with a syllabus from the print era (i.e., no markup, designed to be printed on paper), and transform it into an accessible document that embraces the benefits of universal design. The syllabus will be 'housed' in MS Word (great for accessibility and viewing on mobile devices). With the use of MS Word macros, a derivative of the document can be prepared for [1] uploading as a Google doc (to support machine translation into 180+ languages) or [2] copy/pasted into an AI "text to speech" app (for the audio learner). AI will be integrated into the workflow, to assist with the work and as a potential resource for students. This "mini-project" mirrors the presenter's application of these principles and resources to a 450+ page workbook completed in a recent sabbatical.
