Spatial Data Infrastructure at LISER
Spatial Data Infrastructure at LISER
SDI@LISER
Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) is a strategic project of Luxembourg Institute of Socio-Economic Research (LISER) to facilitate efficient geographic research data management and sharing within and outside LISER, with complying with well-established Open Data and Research principles including FAIR (Fair, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) and TRUST (Transparency, Responsibility, User focus, Sustainability, Technology). The SDI has been in development since September 2022 and is managed by the SDI working group.
Why SDI?
An SDI for research is a system of technologies, policies, and standards that support the collection, harmonization, management, sharing, and (re)use of big and small geo-referenced data in a research context. SDI provides a framework/platform for accessing, analyzing, and visualizing geospatial data from multiple sources. SDI enables researchers to collaborate more effectively and facilitates the application of innovative, advanced research methods with analysis-ready data.
The SDI will broadly benefit researchers within and outside LISER that potentially conduct any research with geo-referenced data.
Key components of SDI
A successful SDI requires a set of components:
a digital catalogue of research resources (e.g., data, software, workflows) to curate them and their metadata;
a collection of datasets contributed by researchers and constructed by the SDI working group;
an optimized software & hardware solution, interface, and architecture to host and share deposited research resources with researchers;
data governance policies implementing FAIR and TRUST principles.
