Leading companies in the Agri-processing sector joined forces with the National Business Initiative (NBI) yesterday at a workshop held to unlock opportunity and shared value through the collective implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This workshop followed on from the SDGs Bootcamp held in Cape Town in April 2019 that the NBI ran to kick-off the Agri-processing sector SDGs project.
At this engaging session, company representatives reflected on the progress of their internal SDGs work, sharing lessons learned and cases of best practice with the rest of the group, before participating in the NBI process to identify a preliminary set of priority SDGs specifically relevant to the Agri-processing sector.
Future workshops, as part of this project, will help to unpack and refine the list of chosen SDG priorities. These priority SDGs will be used as a base from which to develop a set of sector level objectives that will guide collaborative projects for SDGs implementation, sector risk mitigation and opportunity realisation, thereby enhancing sector sustainability.
This workshop kicks off the SDGs project with companies from the Agri-processing sector.
Given that each company has engaged with the SDGs in different ways and to varying extents, this workshop aims to provide all participants with a thorough understanding of what the SDGs are and why they are so relevant to business. Participants are encouraged to think about their company's sustainability in the broader context of the sector in which they operate and how this can be enhanced through sector level collaboration as well as through individual company efforts to build sustainability into core business.
