Eliminate extreme poverty:
By 2030, eliminate all forms of extreme poverty, currently defined as living on less than $1.90 per person per day.
Reduce poverty:
By 2030, reduce by at least half the proportion of men, women and children of all ages living in poverty, as defined by each country.
Case: South Sudan
The largest country in Africa
Problem
Environmental pollution:
South Sudan has significant environmental problems due to pollution from the mining industry, deforestation due to unregulated charcoal production and construction, and the illegal exploitation of natural resources such as timber, ivory, and bushmeat during the long civil war.
Climate change and natural disasters
South Sudan faces the threat of extreme weather events such as droughts and floods that could exacerbate humanitarian crises and threaten the lives of millions of South Sudanese.
Land degradation and deforestation:
Land degradation is a growing problem due to agricultural expansion and deforestation, which poses a threat to the country's food security and ecological balance.
Cause
Causes of vegetation destruction
Timber mining, charcoal production and agricultural reclamation are the main causes of deforestation in South Sudan. These activities not only destroy forest resources, but also exacerbate land degradation and desertification, affecting local biodiversity and ecological balance.
South Sudan is vulnerable to climate change and natural disasters, and these extreme weather events have caused a large number of casualties, displacement and livestock losses, severely affecting people's livelihoods.
Due to the lack of infrastructure and effective environmental management, water resources are highly polluted, especially after floods, when Wells and latrines are flooded and water sources are contaminated, raising the risk of disease outbreaks.
National Adaptation Plan
South Sudan has developed its first National Adaptation Plan (NAP), which aims to reduce the vulnerability of communities to climate change through a planning process to anticipate and address conditions brought about by climate change
Ecosystem Restoration and Climate early Warning Systems
South Sudan has launched a $9 million initiative to help communities adapt to climate change by strengthening climate early warning systems and restoring the country's valuable ecosystems.
National Environmental Policy
South Sudan's National Environmental Policy (NEP) calls for the development of a national climate change adaptation strategy and supports efforts to reduce communities' vulnerability and variability to climate change
