As we have discussed, the design of the website will make your site more attractive, and bring more people to visit. Here are some things to consider:
- Your audience: What are they looking for? How are you delivering it? Knowing your audience and the purpose of the site is key to a good website.
- Organization: Your users do not want to see paragraphs of useless information. Take advantage of bullets, headings, and sub headings to break up the line of vision.
- Font: With Google Sites, we don't have a huge say over font. That said, a font that is simple is far better on the eyes than one with lots of decorative finishes. Compare this font to a calligraphy type font. Although the calligraphy is pretty, it is difficult to read for any extended length of time.
- Colors: The theme doesn't allow for too much variation in color. That said, use color to separate things on the page, and remember you should not fill up the entire page with text and pictures. White space keeps the design modern and uncluttered.
- Navigation: Moving around the site should be easy and intuitive. Again, name your pages well, and keep the names short.
- Consider following an "F" pattern design. Studies have shown that people scan computer screens in an F pattern. Allow users to follow their flow by putting information near the top from left to right and on the side from the top to the bottom.
